Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, Columbia, Argentina and all of the Latin American and Caribbean countries have provided us with many diverse, distinct and exciting musical forms. The mixing of European melodies and harmonies with the rich and complex African rhythms is at the heart of all of the music of the Americas and each country has given us its own flavor in this regard. Each class will focus on a particular country and its music. We’ll start by learning the basic melody of a piece, then we’ll dive into the rhythmic elements that make this music so compelling. From there we will dissect the harmony and help you find chordal and rhythmic accompaniments on your instrument. For those of you who would like to explore improvisation, I’ve got some safe easy techniques for helping you open this door. Classes are structured around the variety of instruments and students who sign up for the class each semester. Some listening to classic recordings will be also be a part of the class time and a strong emphasis will be on Brazilian Choro music. All instruments welcome.
